The DNA of a High-Performing Team

At Cameron Smith & Associates, we understand how important it is to create a high-performing team. Cohesive teams, after all, have many benefits for the workplace and the company overall.

Many components can make up a high-performing team. Throughout our time in the industry, we’ve found several key components that truly drive an effective team.

Clear Communication

When it comes to any relationship, communication is key. Don’t expect your team to be fully functional if there aren’t many active lines of communication. Communication is the most crucial aspect of creating a high-performing team that can complete its tasks in a constructive and timely manner.

So, what does clear communication look like? Often, we’ll see teams delegate a team leader for efficiency. Typically, many believe that the team leader is the head of all communications. Still, a good team will commit to open lines of communication with all members rather than funneling all communications through one person.

Open communication can range from online group chats to in-person meetings to emails. Ultimately, the best communication channels are the ones that work best for your team, allowing each team member to move forward with confidence.

Cohesive Structure & Mutual Respect

Teamwork makes the dream work. One of the easiest ways to cultivate a cohesive team is to make time for team-building exercises. As the team grows and changes, members will be more likely to encourage each other and the group dynamic.

As the old saying goes, respect is earned, not given. When performing team-building exercises, people have the opportunity to learn about each other, both inside and outside of a work environment. When team members take time to understand each other’s unique perspectives and encourage cognitive diversity, it opens up the floor for strengthening communication and building a respectful, high-performing culture.

A great team is all about bringing the right people together and trusting them to encourage great results from one another. Even something as simple as avoiding poorly run meetings fosters better structure.

Clear Goals & Timelines

A high-performing team must commit to clear goals and timelines. The leader must be clear when imparting expectations, accountability and timelines. It is essential to define all deadlines within a project from the onset. A high-performing team will meet goal promptly.

Be sure to define the roles and responsibilities of each member in order not to be stalled by vague priorities. Timelines are essential to the team’s management because they give everyone a set period to accomplish tasks.

Benefits of a High-Performing Team

There are many benefits to cultivating a high-performing team, such as increased efficiency and productivity, motivated employees and better service. Great things can happen to your company when a team is put together well with a united goal.
